Many will not like this posting. It is probably a poor way to introduce myself, but here goes. On the grand scheme of what it has been called to do, the church has failed miserably. Yep, the church is a nearly complete failure. I am pretty sure that this is not news to many, but what I am about to say will likely be.
The statement that the church has failed is not clear unless I explain at what the chruch has failed. Of course, I mean to say that the church has failed at its primary purpose. That purpose is not worship. It is not evangelism. It is not meeting the physical needs of people. All of those are good and necessary things for the church, but not the primary thing the church must be doing.
The primary purpose of the church can be found in Matt. 28; it is discipleship. Why? I do not know. I only know for certain that
the first imperative in the Great Commision is “make disciples.” I can venture a guess. If discipleship happens appropriately, those who make up the church – the regenerate – will have all the requisite tools to complete all of the other tasks of the church effectively. They will have abiding and growing relationships with Christ, and will therefore have proper worship. They will evangelize. They will meet the needs of those who are lacking (both physically and spiritually).
So, then this begs the question, “who is to blame…?
